Records Rohit Sharma broke during his knock of 264
India’s
opening batsman Rohit Sharma smashed a brilliant 264 from 173 balls to register
the highest score in the history of ODI cricket. In the process, he also broke
a number of other records. He was dropped by Thisara Perera after playing a
loose shot early on in his innings, but that did not deter the confidence of
the Mumbai Indians captain. He went from strength to strength and took just 15
balls to get from 200 to 250.
Here are some
records Rohit broke during the knock:
#1 Highest individual score in an ODI innings - 264
Rohit Sharma
broke the record for the highest ODI individual score of all time today. He
didn’t just beat Virender Sehwag’s 219, but also bettered Belinda Clark’s 229
against Denmark, making this the top individual score in an innings across all
one-day internationals.

#2 Highest List A score by an Indian
Rohit fell
just 4 runs short of breaking the highest individual score of all time in List
A cricket. He had Ali Brown’s 268 in his sights, but was dismissed on the last
ball of the innings when he went for a huge shot in an attempt to break the
record.
Despite
falling short of Brown’s score, the Mumbaikar did manage to break the record
for the highest List A score by an Indian, which was previously held
by Shikhar Dhawan who scored 248 for India A against South Africa A at
Pretoria in 2013.
#3 First batsman to score two double centuries in ODI cricket
When Sachin
Tendulkar scored the first double century in ODI history in 2010, many
thought it would stay on as the world record for years to come. Less than
5 years on, there have already have been 3 higher scores – each one of them by
an Indian batsman.
By scoring 264
today, Rohit Sharma became the first man to hit two double hundreds in ODI
cricket. No cricketer has ever achieved the feat before, with Tendulkar and Sehwag
having scored 1 double century each.
Rohit had
scored his first double hundred against Australia in Bangalore last year.
#4 Highest 4s in an innings - 33
Last year,
when Rohit Sharma scored 209 against Australia in Bangalore, he had set the
record for hitting the most sixes in an innings. Today, he made sure that he
held the record for hitting the most fours in an ODI innings as well. He
hit 33 fours, en route to his 264 at the Eden Gardens, beating Sachin Tendulkar
and Virender Sehwag’s record of 25 fours. The Master Blaster had set the record
when he scored 200* against South Africa back in 2010, whereas Sehwag
matched Tendulkar’s feat during his knock of 219 against the West
Indies in 2011.
#5 Most boundaries in an ODI innings - 42
Rohit Sharma
also hit 9 sixes, in addition to the astonishing 33 fours he hit during the
course of his innings. He comfortably beat Sehwag’s record of 32 boundaries (25
fours and 7 sixes). The Delhi batsman had achieved the same when he had
set the previous world record ODI score against West Indies back in 2011.
Rohit hit his
42 boundaries from 173 balls, which meant that 24.28% of the deliveries he
faced in this match went to the fence. He scored 186 runs in boundaries, which
is also a world record.
#6 Most balls faced by a batsman in a 50-over ODI match - 173
Rohit Sharma
also broke the record for having faced the most number of deliveries in an ODI
innings. He faced 173 balls during his knock on Thursday, bettering the
previous record set by Ashish Bagai (172) of Canada in an ODI match
against Scotland on 31 January 2007.
The record for
the most balls faced by an individual in an ODI is held by New Zealand’s Glenn
Turner, who faced 201 deliveries in the days when ODIs consisted of 60 overs a
side.
#7 Bonus: Most 400+ scores by a team - India
India became
the first team to post a score of 400+ in an ODI match five times. The Men in
Blue first reached this landmark in an innings during their forgettable World
Cup campaign in 2007 against Bermuda. Since then, India have scored 400+ totals
against Sri Lanka, South Africa and West Indies – all at home.
Here are
India’s highest totals in ODI cricket:
- 418/5 vs West Indies, Indore, 2011
- 414/7 vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2009
- 413/5 vs Bermuda, Port of Spain, 2007
- 404/5 vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014
- 401/3 vs South Africa, Gwalior, 2010
